Oh, the day we figure out the allergy issues will be a happy day!

It's a Boy!

Yes, we are having a boy! We had our ultrasound today and we excited to see our little guy. We had 4D this time (pics soon to come-we need to scan them still) and that was fun to see him. The due date is still December 1st and the baby is over one pound.

Allergies

Liam's Rashy Face at Its Finest

Well, Liam had an appointment with an allergist today and got his back all scratched up. We found that he is very allergic to dogs (we were thinking about getting one but now that's off the list until he grows out of it-we hope!), as well as very allergic to peanuts and eggs (both of which he has never touched except through mama's milk). We were glad to hear that Liam is only very mildly allergic to the cat and so Owen still has a home! But, I have been forbidden to eat peanuts and eggs so I can't pass it on through my milk to our boy.

My first reaction, run and check the nearest chocolate bar and ice cream labels to see if they contain eggs. Good news! There is a rainbow in this little rain storm. In both of the products that I checked, neither had eggs! I may survive this. The possibility of no chocolate and no ice cream for three more months while being pregnant seriously had me thinking of putting the baby strictly to formula. But because Liam has also had reactions to milk and soy based formulas, the doctor said I need to start supplementing my ever dwindling milk supply with a special, hypoallergenic formula that she said "you have to sell your first child to pay for." So, that put me back to thinking maybe just cutting out eggs and peanuts, even if it had to be at the expense of no sweets for preggy, might still be the better option.

All in all, I'm glad for a few answers because I felt like we couldn't always figure out what was making him have rashes and feel junky. We have another appointment in about 10 days to see if this all helps.

Blue or Pink?

We have our ultrasound coming up to find out if we're having a boy or a girl. We're curious-what do you think we're having? Keep in mind, the Tobin men rarely produce girls :)

Do Hard Things

We went with the high school students from church to Des Moines, Iowa this Friday and Saturday for the Do Hard Things conference. It was quite the whirlwind trip. We left Friday night, spent the night in a church, spent all day at the conference, and took off back for Rockford at 6 pm. I personally didn't hear that much of the conference because for some reason Liam's attention span was a bit short of the required 8 hours. I think some of the high school students also fell into that category :) But, from what they all said, it was a great event and encouraged them not to accept the low expectations that society has allowed teenagers to fall into. The speakers emphasized, so I hear, that the teenage years aren't simply a break from life and responsibility, but a time to grow in character and into the men and women that God wants them to be. We're praying the students don't just experience an "event high," but that lives would be changed.

A side note-Liam didn't get much sleep on the trip, but he is making up for it today! He got to sleep at about 11:30 last night and is sleeping still! Liam is usually a champion sleeper, but it didn't work so well sleeping Friday night in the same room with a bunch of students and then trying to fall asleep on the bus when the oh-so-entertaining kids were having fun just a few feet away. Liam has woken up just a few times to eat since last night, but goes right back to sleep. Poor boy!

Any suggestions on how to take your kids on ministry overnighters without destroying them?

Spare Time

What have you been up to lately? We've been battling new public enemy #1-japanese beetles. They are devouring everything in the neighborhood and it is driving me a bit bonkers trying to get rid of them.

Let Me Out!

Midwest Storms

This was the view from our driveway this past Sunday-pretty spectacular!

Mr. Mouseketeer

Karen and Sean recently traveled to California and went to Disneyland. Here are a few pics of Liam enjoying a gift from Disneyland. Although I think he looks mighty cute with the hat on, I do believe that his favorite way to use the hat is to chew on it. Thanks Karen and Sean!

Sunny Evening

I thought I'd share a picture of our proud cat, Owen. He has been waiting for this life for 3 1/2 years. He has always wanted to explore the great outdoors, but we have prevented him for many reasons.

1. He is declawed and we thought the other neighborhood kitties might beat up on him.

2. We lived in LA before and all the cats in our neighborhood looked feral and like they were about to die of some terrible disease. So, we restricted the cats he could socialize with and kept it to Tally, the Gilcher's cat who lives next door. Owen misses Tally, his one and only friend.

3. Where we lived in LA, we were by a lot of traffic and we figured Owen's chances of being squashed by one of the millions of cars was quite high if he went outside.

So, now, in the great land of Illinois, Owen roams free. Well, as far as our yard because that's as far as he'll venture, but he is quite excited and proud about it. And of course, he wants back inside at a moments notice of something terrifying, like a crack of thunder, a distant lawnmower, or a a stiff wind (yep, I'm serious about the extent of his current lack of bravery).

Here's a shot of Liam enjoying the evening in the few minutes between when it is too hot and humid for him to be out and when the mosquitoes come out to play.

Liam Having Fun

Such a cute boy!

Liam has been enjoying a good game of peekaboo. One of the many ways he enjoys playing is by holding onto the sofa when I am sitting on it, squatting down until he can't see me, then popping back up, laughing and screaming. It is fun just to watch him have so much fun!
