Big Boy Bed

Today, I broke down the crib and set up the toddler bed. I have to say, I thought the people who designed this toddler bed weren't too bright as I tried to squeeze my fingers into tiny holes to tighten some bolts. However, when Andy got home and I told him about it, he looked at the loosely put together bed, he promptly got a socket wrench and tightened the whole thing up. I guess I was the one that wasn't too bright. I was thinking that they should invent something to make tightening those bolts easier, I guess they already had.

Anyway, Liam was SO EXCITED! He wanted to eat lunch early and then promptly ran up to go take his nap at 11:30 (he'll usually go down between 12:30 and 1). He slept great, and then just got up and played for a half hour in his room by himself when he woke up. The blanket Grandma Rosalie made for him fits perfectly on it. He had a fun time "making his bed" too as he tried to straighten the blanket.

It was above freezing the other day, so we went out to play and the boys loved it... that is until Asher put his hands in the snow and wasn't pleased with the sensation. Liam had fun on his skateboard and Asher enjoyed playing with some toys.

We spoke with Asher's doctor today about his test and they were very encouraged by how his kidney has improved. The function and the drainage are better. They want him to have another test in 6 months just to make sure that it is still working properly, but they are very optimistic that it's function will continue to improve! Praise the Lord!

Potty Training

Liam is doing really well learning to use the potty. There was one day in there where I thought he might not be ready. However, when I introduced juice as a reward for going on the potty, the kid has barely had an accident since Thursday. This is his "happy" face.

Asher had another kidney test today to see if his surgery in November fixed his kidney. We haven't found out the results yet but we will let you all know.

Asher had to wake up around 6 am for his test, he usually doesn't get up till 7, 7:30 so he was tired (although he had got to a cheerful point for the picture).

Asher's Update

I took Asher in for his post op follow up appointment after his pyeloplasty. They put some dye into his kidney through the tube going into it, in hopes that the dye would go down the normal route to his diaper. His diaper didn't turn blue, which means the dye didn't get through. The doctors are still not too concerned, although I didn't understand quite why. They have been quick to express concern at other times though, so I'm hoping they are right this time in not being worried. They took his tube out of his back, so for the first time in 2 months, he doesn't have any weird tubes hanging out of his body! Yay for that! You can pray with us that the surgery will work in restoring function to the kidney and that his ureter would stay open so the urine can pass down to his bladder. He has a test in 2 months that will test us if the surgery is working. I am excited that he can finally have a real bath again!

Asher was supposed to be in the hospital for his birthday, but his surgery was canceled, so we threw together a quick celebration with the Dirkse's. I made a quick cake and couldn't understand why the writing icing was running....

Asher's Check Up

We went to the pediatrician today for Asher's 6 month check up. He is 17 lb 3 oz and 27 1/4 inches. The way he is growing he won't be a light weight like his brother. Asher is so laid back that he verges on sedentary, which helps pack on the pounds too I guess.

Good news about his nerve problem (the Horner's syndrome). The pediatrician doesn't think that he has it because he only has 1 out of the 4 signs (unequal pupils, droopy eye, no sweat and no flushing on that side of his face). So, that is good news! Thanks for praying!

Asher has taken to eating a bit better, as you can see from knawing on the watermelon. We found out this week that he has a problem with one of his cranial nerves, which we discovered because his pupils aren't the same size when the light is dim. You can see it if you look closely at some of the pictures. He saw a neurologic opthamoligist this week and will again in 2 weeks. He'll probably have some tests to see what is causing the nerve problem. He doesn't seem to be bothered by it or by his kidney problem, and we're thankful for that. We'd appreciate your continued prayers for his healing!

Got a new attitude? Well, more acurately his hair now reflects his attitude. He's definitely got that rebellious, wild streak so we thought we'd leave a mohawk in for a bit before we cut it short for the summer. We think it is cute :)

This picture is a bit deceiving. You might think, well, Asher certainly appears to like his carrots. This would not be accurate. He is just loving the undivided attention of me trying to spoon feed him one ounce of food for 40 minutes. He laughs and smiles the whole time, occasionally gags at the taste of the carrots, then goes right back on smiling. The carrots eventually drip out of his mouth or his tongue pushes them out when he smiles. He'll get it someday, or he'll rival Grandma Bennett for the slowest eater award.
